I passed my Magento certified developer exam after studying for it on and off for the best part of a year.
I’ve done other developer certification programs like Zend certified PHP5 engineer but I found this one the most challenging and rewarding
– I am now included in the Magento certified developer directory.
It’s the kind of exam where you really need to just get stuck in, there’s no magic study guide to prepare you correctly.
Advice for passing the exam
My advice would be to make sure you cover all the material thoroughly, then go through it again, then once more for good measure.
You’ll know you’re ready; you’ll begin to dream about base EAV resource setup classes.
Even though I’ve been developing Magento sites for a while now, the level of knowledge required to pass their certification programs go beyond what you learn in practical development.
In some areas it definitely felt like it required you to remember information that wouldn’t help in the development of a site or extension but overall it definitely improved my knowledge and there were a few light bulb moments leaving me saying
“aahhh so that’s what makes Magento do that”.
Studying for the Exam
I used a variety of information to help study for the exam. I’d say the following were particularly useful.
- Xdebug extension for PHP and walking through some of Magento’s code flow and function calls.
- Fundamentals of Magento couse & official study guide
- Alan Storm in-depth articles
- Community created Magento Study guide
- Belvg Certification blog posts
Then when you’ve covered all that, take a look through Exam Self Assessment Check List.
This which we give you a good indication about if you’re ready to take the exam.
